Purpose of the cartography. Elements of geodesy: the representation of the earth's surface, the geoid, the ellipsoid. Cartographic representation, projection systems, geographical map features and classifications, concept of scale. Coordinate systems: spherical and Cartesian coordinates, geographic coordinates, UTM, UPS, Gauss-Boaga. The Military Grid Reference System. Altimetry: contour lines, dimensional points, digital terrain models The official cartography in Italy: history, scales, frameworks, products. Methods and main software for coordinate transformation. Elements of topography: measurement of angles and distances in the field. The orientation of the map, geographic north, network north and magnetic north. The calculation of magnetic declination and magnetic variation. The GPS system. Description and use. Elements of photogrammetry: fundamental principles. Features of an aerial photograph. Reading the landscape in the IGM map: the symbology and the recognition of natural and anthropic elements and the morphology of the territory.
