The course will present the fundamentals of general linguistics and will introduce to the basic topics of historical linguistics: Principles of language classification. World's Languages: genealogy, typology, geography. Semiotic foundations of linguistics: language, signs and symbols. Introduction to linguistic analysis: phonetics, phonology, morphology, word-formation, syntax, lexical and general semantics, pragmatics, sociolinguistics. Linguistic change: causes and explanations. Phonetic change: types of development. Phonological change: articulatory, structural, formal, sociolinguistic theories.
