A) Theoretical part
1. The evolution of sustainability concept. 1A - Presentation of the course. Evolutionary dynamics and pressures on the environment, planetary limits and the search for sustainability. Anthropocene and complexity. The different scales of environmental policies, impacts over time and space, government, territory and community. 1B - The premises of sustainable development. The sustainability concept evolution, environmental and ecological economics. Theoretical assumptions for programming interventions to protect environment and natural resources. Regulatory, financial and voluntary tools into environmental policies.
2. Globalization and sustainable development. 2A - The introduction of environmental matters on the agenda of international policies for growth and development. Sustainability as a tool to regulate the globalized market. 2B - Environmental policies promoters: international agencies, environmental movements and civil society. Mulilateral Environmental Agreements on nature and biodiversity, climate change, transboundary air and water pollution. 2C - The Rio + 20 conference and the objectives of sustainable development (SDG). The 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development.
3. Environmental policies in Europe and Italy. 3A - European environmental policy, from environmental action programs to horizontal strategies. The general principles, the legislative framework, the financial resources, the structural funds and the integration of environmental issues. 3B - The planning of policies and interventions about soil, water resources, biodiversity, climate change mitigation and adaptation. 3C - Sustainable development goals in Italy. National sustainable development strategy, policies for the environment and natural resources, strategies, programs and initiatives at national, regional and local level.
4. Integrated policies and projects. 4A - The case of the Common Agricultural Policy and the EAFRD fund. 4B - The dissemination of good practices and the transfer of eco-innovations using LIFE + Program and other European funds in Europe.
B) Application part a) The environmental policies monitoring. The definition of objectives and targets. Environmental indicators and indices. How to analyze information sources and manage information. b) Participatory processes and co-definition of environmental interventions. Agenda 21 and local initiatives. Know, process, share and act. How to avoid the emergence of socio-environmental conflicts. c) Payments for Eco-systems Services .The principles and methodologies of PES in local policies. How to become an ecological broker.
