(syllabus)
Title: English in use: a grammar for communication The course includes the following contents to be developed in a 60 hours course (+ 60 hours activities online): 1) a survey of the way students have learnt their English through formal and informal education in order to develop critical awareness about language and language learning process; an introduction to CEFR and its levels descriptors; what is communicative competence (1 week). 2) a survey of different descriptions of the morpho-syntactical level of the English language through consulting different grammar books; a detailed description of communicative/functional grammar (1 week). 3) through a communicative/functional approach a comparative analysis of the main areas of contrast between Italian and English a. verb system, particularly tense and aspect (4 weeks) b. modality (1 week) c. word formation and word order (1 week) d. concept of mass and of defining/non-defining (1 week) 4) presentation of the final exam through numerous sample tests (1 week).
