(syllabus)
The course is divisible in two modules (each one with 24 hours). The first module “Per una storia dell’arte medievale dal tardo-antico al gotico internazionale (secoli IV-XIV)” offers a basic knowledge of medieval art history. The detailed module “Santa Maria in Gradi. Da chiesa domenicana a sede universitaria” will be divided in four study lines: the structure and the original destination of the spaces: from the cloisters to the church, to the survivals of the ancient convent, of the Domus Dei hospital, on the relationship between the Dominican convent and the city of Viterbo (itinerant lesson in Santa Maria in Gradi); the artworks originally in S. Maria in Gradi, today conserved in Museo Civico of Viterbo (museum lesson); the papal tombs actually in San Francesco alla Rocca (lesson in San Francesco alla Rocca, Viterbo); the so-called San Tommaso Bible and the Dominican Viterbo scriptorium (library lesson). The lections will be supported with exercises, seminars and visits to some monumental places and library for manuscript conservation.
