• Introduction to the problems characterising the Iranian and Islamic, in particular Shiite, world (aimed at placing the proposed issues in a critical historical frame) • Introduction to the problems related to travel literature; • Safavid Iran and the figure of Shah Abbas • Pietro della Valle: biography and works • The Letters form Persia by Pietro della Valle; reading and analysis of selected passages • Qajar Iran and the figure of Nasiroddin Shah • Luigi Pesce and Antonio Giannuzzi, army officers and photographers at the court of Nasiroddin Shah, and their photographic documentation of Iran • The 1862 Italian mission in Persia: purposes of the mission and documentation • Luigi Montebone, army officer and photographer of the 1862 Italian mission, and his photographic documentation of Iran • Pahlavi Iran and the figure of Mohammad Reza Shah • Vincenzo Bianchini: biography and works • Acqua del diavolo by Vincenzo Bianchini: reading and analysis of selected passages.
