PROGRAMME: The course is divided into three parts: 1. introduction to the historical grammar of Italian, with written exercises; 2. profile of the linguistic history of Italian from its origins to the present day; 3. in-depth study of the contemporary language and in particular of the language of newspapers and the mass media.

Giuseppe Patota, Nuovi lineamenti di grammatica storica dell’italiano, Bologna, Il Mulino, 2012 (the whole volume except chapter VI: The languages of Italy in the Middle Ages: an overview) - students are also allowed to use the first edition of the text.
The program is valid for frequenting students and for non frequenting students. Attendance is strongly recommended. The volume by G. Patota is also suitable for the editions prior to that of 2012; it is mandatory to study the volume by R. Gualdo in the new edition 2017, which contains chapters not present in the 2007 edition.
